Hello and thanks for stopping by my blog as you travel the Be Mine Blog Tour. My Project is a heart shaped needle case and scissor holder. I'm so excited about it because it's my own pattern and the very first pattern I have ever designed. I will give a brief tutorial here on my blog. Go here for the full PDF file of illustrations and instructions. You are also going to need a pattern which you will find hereWhen you print the pattern as I stated in my PDF Pattern, please be sure that the printer is printing it at 100% with minimal margins to give an accurate pattern size.
Ok, we are ready to begin. First you will cut out forty 2" squares from a charm pack of your choice. Arrange in 5 rows of 8 squares per row and piece together a patchwork rectangle.
Layer and quilt and then using the double-heart pattern cut out this shape which will become the outside of your needle case.
Now for the inside which I'm calling the lining in my pattern. You will use lightweight fusible interfacing, iron to the back of your lining fabric then cut out one double-heart shape.
For the needle holder, you need a scrap of white wool, cut a 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" rectangle. Fold in half lengthwise and press. There is a small heart pattern provided in my pattern PDF for cutting out a red wool heart. Position that to the front of the white wool needle holder and stitch 1/8" all the way around. You will then stitch this to the lining per the pattern instructions.
There is a larger heart pattern on my pattern PDF which is for the scissor holder. Cut one from brown wool and position on lining per pattern instructions. Sew 1/8" on the sides leaving the top open for the scissors. I started my stitching on the top curve on the heart and ending on the opposite top curve. Your lining should look like this at this point.
To make a button loop, cut a 1" X 3 3/4" strip of fabric. Press it in half and then press each side to the middle as shown in photo. Fold this to form a 1/4" fabric strip which you will then stitch on each side. Check pattern for loop placement and baste stitch to lining.
Now your lining looks like this.
You are now ready to stitch the outside and lining together. With right sides together stitch all the way around with a 1/4" seam leaving an opening on the bottom for turning. Clip the curves and turn and press. Slip stitch the opening. Refer to instructions for stitching a line in the middle between the two hearts to give it a spine, I think it makes it easier for folding.
Last thing to do is sew a button to the outside of the needle case. I found this cute heart shaped button at Joann's.
I hope you enjoy making my heart shaped needle case, I had fun designing it. Please leave a comment on this post for your chance to win a $50 gift certificate to The Fat Quarter Shop. I'm giving away this prize, a Giddy Charm Pack, a pair of Stork Scissors and a package of needles. That gives a you a chance to win two prizes on my blog. Also, if you visit each blog on the Be Mine Blog Tour and leave comments on each one you are eligible for a grand prize which is a $100 gift certificate to The Fat Quarter Shop. Thanks so much to the FQS for donating prizes. All drawings for the prizes will be done at the end of the tour on the 16th of January so come back Sunday January 16th to find out the winners.
